Born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor in 1947, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is universally acknowledged as one of the greatest basketball players in the history of the game. Abdul-Jabbar was recognized as a basketball star during his years playing in high school and he continued utilizing his talents while playing for the UCLA Bruins in college from 1966 to 1969. Immediately after college he was picked first in the 1969 NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. In 1975 he began playing for the Los Angeles Lakers.
During his twenty-year career (1969-1989), Abdul-Jabbar scored more total points than anyother players in the NBA league history (38,387). He also played the second-highest number of games in NBA history (1,560). Abdul-Jabbar was awarded the honor of Most Valuable Player six times – a record number – in addition to leading his team to victory in the NBA Championships six times.
